Botox: A More youthful look without going under the knife

At Zelko Aesthetics in Milwaukee Botox is used to smooth out wrinkles on your face in one appointment with us. Botox is a non-surgical wrinkle treatment that is FDA approved to get rid of frown lines (or 11 lines) that are making you look older than you would like to appear. It is also used to smooth crow’s feet around the eyes and forehead lines that result from making daily facial expressions. With Botox, you can eliminate dynamic wrinkles and get a more youthful look without going under the knife.

What is Botox?

Botox has two purposes. It is a temporary wrinkle treatment, and also may be used to prevent excess sweating in people with hyperhidrosis. As a wrinkle treatment, it's injected into key facial muscles. Starting a few days after injections, the muscle relaxes so that the overlying skin moves less.

With the skin smooth and relaxed, it helps to reduce wrinkles and expression lines that have been nagging you every time you glance in the mirror. Botox for hyperhidrosis, or excessive perspiration, is also FDA cleared to work. It stops nerve signals that trigger sweat production in the underarms so you can enjoy several months of sweating less. People that suffer from excessive underarm sweating are relieved to have dry underarms year-round. Some patients have hyperhidrosis, regardless of the weather. However, it’s also helpful in the warm Midwest summer months to stop underarm sweating.

Botox is meant for expression lines, not deep-set wrinkles that go away a few hours after making facial expressions. It is best for eye wrinkles (crows feet), forehead lines, and frown lines between brows (11s). Dysport may also be considered as an alternative to Botox injections.

Wrinkles on the lower face, such as smile lines (nasolabial folds) and puppet lines, are better treated with dermal fillers composed of hyaluronic acid. Unlike Botox, wrinkle fillers do not affect the facial muscle at all so you can continue making facial expressions. Instead, they fill the depressed wrinkle in the skin so that it’s no longer visible for several months at a time. We will help match you with the appropriate treatment. If you are considering facial rejuvenation procedures such as a facelift, Dr. Zelko can help with that, too.

What is Botox recovery like?

There is no Botox downtime or recovery period. You can go back to work, lunch, social activities, and chores immediately after you leave the appointment. When using topical anesthetic, Botox can virtually be painless. Even if you don't get some kind of numbing agent, pain is usually minimal, maybe just feeling a bit of a pinch.

There are few restrictions, although it is best to limit touching the area of skin that was treated for a few hours. Your injector may also recommend that you avoid lying down after treatment. It’s generally best to avoid physical exertion for about 24 hours after the procedure, so you may need to skip the gym after your appointment. Although certainly not everyone experiences this, some patients report a slight headache following their injections.

Your Botox Consultation

A skin examination in-person is necessary to determine how many units of Botox, measured in cc’s, is needed to soften facial wrinkles. Our facial rejuvenation specialists at Zelko Aesthetics perform Botox injections every day to help patients across the Midwest look younger and more refreshed.

During your consultation, Dr. Zelko, or a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist will meet with you to talk about your precise facial aging concerns. You may have expression lines or deep-set wrinkles. We strive to provide you with the best Botox Milwaukee has to offer, and will help you determine if Botox and Dysport for expressive wrinkles will provide the results you want, and may also discuss whether dermal fillers for static wrinkles are appropriate. All treatments are customized to your needs, as we understand that every patient is unique.

Does insurance cover Botox?

Insurance does not cover the Botox procedure when it is done for cosmetic reasons related to normal skin aging, or even to resolve excessive sweating.

How long does Botox last?

As much as we wish Botox could last forever, unfortunately it can’t. Over time, it will begin to wear off, leaving the nerves again able to send signals to the muscles, to start contracting and working. Generally speaking, Botox lasts around 3 to 4 months. Some patients have longer lasting results with it than others, in the 4 to 6 month range, and some have less long lasting results at around the 2 month range. It’s normal for those getting an injection for the first time to notice it may not be as long lasting initially, but can have longer lasting results on the second treatment and thereafter. Every body is unique, and each has a unique experience, which is why results may vary somewhat between patients. If you worried about whether Botox will make you look older when it wears off, you don't have to be. From a medical standpoint, Botox does NOT make you appear older when it wears off, you just will have lost the smooth appearance of your skin that you got with it; but you can achieve that again with further injections.

As mentioned, repeated treatments have been seen by some to produce longer lasting results, towards that 4 to 6 month range. You can speak with our very experienced cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Zelko, to determine how often you’re able to receive injections safely. Generally, you should avoid getting injections less than 3 months after your last treatment, in order to prevent a resistance to Botox.
