Candidacy Assessment
The Mirror Test
The Mirror Test tells you whether you need body contouring or weight loss. If the shape of a specific area is what bothers you, that is contouring. If your overall size is what bothers you, that is weight loss.
Stand in front of a mirror and look at the area you are considering. If it looked the way you want, would you feel meaningfully different? A clear yes points toward body contouring. A no points toward weight management.
Before you call anyone, there is a question worth asking yourself honestly.
Stand in front of a mirror. Look at the area you are thinking about. Now ask: if that area looked the way you want it to look, would you feel differently about yourself in a meaningful way? Not differently in a fleeting way - differently in a way that affects how you move through the world.
If the answer is yes, that is the beginning of the right conversation. If the answer is uncertain, that uncertainty is also worth bringing to a consultation. Dr. Zelko has heard every version of this question. He will not tell you what you want to hear. He will tell you what is actually true.
The Mirror Test
Stand in Front of a Mirror. Ask This.
Dr. Zelko uses this assessment in every consultation. It is not a sales tool. It is a filter - designed to tell you honestly whether body contouring is the right solution for what bothers you.
"When I look in the mirror, am I bothered by specific areas that are out of proportion with the rest of my body - or am I bothered by my overall body size?"
If the mirror points to contouring, the next question is which one, and the self-assessment on which procedure matches your anatomy narrows it before you ever call.
The Distinction That Matters
Body Contouring vs. Weight Loss - Clearly Explained
These are two different problems with two different solutions. Understanding which one applies to you is the most important step before any consultation - and it is the question Dr. Zelko asks first at every appointment.
What it changes: The location of fat deposits, the presence of excess skin, the shape and proportion of specific body areas. A guest who removes concentrated abdominal fat and excess skin through a TickleTuck has a dramatically different shape - but her overall weight changes relatively little.
The right guest: Someone reasonably satisfied with her overall weight who is frustrated by specific areas that diet and exercise haven't changed. The woman whose abdomen is disproportionate to the rest of her body. The woman whose arms draw her attention every time she raises them. The woman whose C-section shelf has not responded to years of core work.
What it does not do: Significantly reduce overall body weight. Remove visceral fat (the fat around organs - only subcutaneous fat is accessible). Replace ongoing healthy lifestyle habits.
What it changes: Total body mass through caloric deficit and metabolic change. When successful, it reduces volume proportionally across the body - which may or may not address the specific areas the guest is bothered by.
The right guest: Someone whose primary concern is overall body size rather than specific concentrated deposits. Someone who has not yet reached a stable weight and whose body composition is still actively changing.
The important note: Significant weight loss - particularly rapid loss through GLP-1 medications - often creates the skin laxity and concentrated residual deposits that make body contouring appropriate afterward. Many guests pursue weight management first, reach a stable weight, and then consult with Dr. Zelko about addressing what remains. The full comparison, including who benefits from each path and in what order, is on the body contouring versus weight loss page.
The Honest Evaluation
What Dr. Zelko Will Tell You At the Consultation
"If you're not going to be happy with the result, I'm not going to do the procedure. That conversation happens at the consultation - not after the procedure."
- Dr. Timothy Zelko, D.O.Honest evaluation is one of the four core values at Zelko Aesthetics. It means the consultation is not a sales presentation. It is a direct assessment of whether body contouring is the right tool for your specific situation - and if it is not, what is.
The three outcomes of a Zelko Aesthetics consultation:
You're a candidate - here's what's appropriate
The examination confirms the Mirror Test. A specific procedure or combination is recommended. You understand exactly what the result will look like and when.
You're a candidate - but not yet
The examination shows you would benefit from body contouring, but timing is not right - active weight loss in progress, or a different procedure is more appropriate first. You leave with a clear plan.
Body contouring is not the right answer for you
The Mirror Test result, the examination, and an honest conversation lead to the conclusion that body contouring will not give you what you want. You leave knowing that - and knowing what will.
The examination confirms what the Mirror Test suggests. 60 to 90 minutes. Honest answers. No pressure. Candidacy is its own question. Timing, prior surgeries, and health history all factor in, and who qualifies for awake body contouring walks through each one.
FAQs
Questions About Candidacy
How much weight do you lose with TickleLipo?
TickleLipo is not a weight loss procedure. The fat removed - even in a comprehensive multi-area session - does not produce the scale change a guest seeking weight loss is looking for. What changes is distribution: targeted fat deposits are reduced, specific areas are reshaped, and the proportional relationship between body areas improves. The scale may move modestly, but that is not the goal and should not be the measure of success. The right measure is how the specific areas that bothered you compare to before.
I'm using a GLP-1 medication. Should I wait until I've lost more weight?
Generally yes - with important nuance. If you are still actively losing weight on a GLP-1 medication, your body composition is still changing. Performing body contouring while your weight is in active decline means the result will change as your weight changes. The better approach for most guests is to reach a stable weight, maintain it for 3 to 6 months, and then consult about what remains. Many GLP-1 medication users find that rapid weight loss creates exactly the skin laxity and concentrated residual deposits that body contouring is designed to address - just not until the weight is stable.
I'm close to my goal weight but not quite there. Am I a candidate?
Stable weight is more important than goal weight. If you are within a range you are likely to maintain, that is a better indicator of readiness than whether you have reached a specific number. The examination determines candidacy. A guest who is 15 pounds from her goal weight but has been stable at her current weight for a year and is frustrated by specific areas that have not responded to diet and exercise is often an excellent candidate. A guest who is 5 pounds from her goal but is still actively losing is less ready than the weight difference suggests.
What if the Mirror Test gives me a mixed answer?
Most guests have a mixed answer - overall volume concerns combined with specific area frustrations. That is normal and the consultation sorts it out. What matters is which concern is primary. If overall size is the dominant frustration, body contouring will be unsatisfying even if it improves specific areas, because the guest will still be dissatisfied with what she sees in the mirror overall. If specific areas are the dominant frustration, the consultation can determine whether body contouring addresses them adequately. Bring your honest answer - mixed or clear - to the consultation.
My friends told me I don't need this. Does that matter?
No. The decision belongs to you. Linda - a guest whose story is published on this site - wrote that her friends told her "This is what 68-year-old women look like," "No one sees your body anyway," and "Why waste your money." She scheduled the appointment, kept it, and wrote four pages about what she saw in the mirror one month later. The consultation is between you and Dr. Zelko. What other people think about your body is not part of the assessment.
